Inside a Louisiana Hospital Battling the Delta Variant

Rick Rojas

Rick Rojas📍 Reporting from Hammond, La.

As the Delta variant has driven a rise in cases across the country, Louisiana has seen the highest rate of cases per capita.

The variant is more aggressive and transmissible. Doctors have patients in their 20s and 30s — some otherwise healthy — rapidly declining and dying. That’s a major departure from previous waves of Covid-19, which had the most impact on older people or patients with underlying health concerns.

Fear has helped goose Louisiana’s lagging vaccination rate. Still, just 37 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, trailing the national rate.
